# Play with friends

Add someone as a friend to see when they are online. Put them in a party to make sure you land in the same game.

## Add a friend

Three ways, all equivalent:

* Select their avatar in chat: right-click on Java, tap and hold on Bedrock, then choose **Add friend**.
* Open the social menu from your hotbar in the lobby.
* Type `/friend add <playername>`.

Your friend receives a request and can accept or decline. Use your social menu or the command `/friend pending` to see requests you have not answered.

|| Gamertags with spaces: replace each space with an underscore when typing the command.

## Create a party

1. Invite someone with `/party invite <playername>`, or through the social menu.
2. They accept with `/party accept <yourname>`.
3. Walk into any game portal. Everyone in the party joins with you.

Party members follow the leader between games and can chat separately from Team and Global chats.

## Party controls

| I want to | Command |
| ---- |
| See who is in my party | `/party info` |
| Talk only to my party | `/party chat` |
| Send one global message while party chat is on | Start the message with `!` |
| Remove someone | `/party kick <playername>` |
| Hand over the party | `/party setowner <playername>` |
| Leave | `/party leave` |
| Close the party for everyone | `/party disband` |

## Messaging

On **Java**: `/msg <playername> <message>`, or `/fmsg <playername> <message>` for someone on your friends list.
On **Bedrock**, `/msg` and `/tell` are switched off for privacy and safety reasons. Message the player through Xbox, moderated by Microsoft.
